Our History

Deer Valley Racquet Club was formed in 1986. The club was founded by local architect Raymond Howell, and his wife Billie, who found the tennis facilities available in an around the town of Boone to be somewhat lacking. Their vision for DVRC was to provide the local community with a first class facility for both tennis and fitness enthusiasts, one that could serve the needs of both full-time residents as well as the seasonal residents who relocate here from all over the south for the summer season.

The club started out with very modest beginnings, having six outdoor hard asphalt courts and a trailer to act as the office and pro shop, however the long term plan was far more ambitious. Mr. Howell designed the facility to be constructed in several phases over a number of years. Since there were no indoor tennis courts anywhere in the area at that time, the first phase of the expansion took place in 1987 with the construction of the club’s indoor tennis facility, which includes 3 Deco-Turf hard courts, as well as space for a lounge and pro shop, along with some exercise facilities. A short time later, in the summer of 1988, construction began on the club’s indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

The next phase of the project, construction of the current clubhouse, pro shop, and locker rooms, as well as the restaurant and bar, took place in 1995, followed by the addition of 4 Har-Tru clay courts adjacent to the pool, and finally, the addition of 2 new outdoor hard courts in 2002.
