Corduroy and Continental Drift

The Dolomite performances are, predictably, a distraction from the true pursuit of perfect grooming.

The reports from Milano Cortina, detailed in Mr. Kelly’s dispatch, are…acceptable. A parade of athletic achievement, certainly, and the Italian jets do offer a fleeting aesthetic pleasure. However, one observes a distinct lack of focus on the fundamental: surface quality. These athletes require meticulously prepared snow, just as we do. Though their demands, naturally, are far more strenuous.

Here, at Deer Valley, the grooming crews have been striving for a particular texture, something akin to a freshly pressed linen suit. It holds, thankfully, despite the influx. The Ikon Pass contingent continues to swell, their presence a slight dimming of the mercury-colored clouds overhead. They seem unaware that the true reward lies in solitude.

The Sultan Express this morning offered glimpses of immaculate corduroy on Bald Mountain. Carpenter lift, predictably, was already showing signs of wear. Silver Lake, while possessing a certain picturesque quality, has always been prone to early-day compaction. I suspect Empire is holding best, though accessing it now feels akin to navigating a small European capital.

The dedication of these Olympic athletes is commendable, though ultimately irrelevant to the pursuit of a quiet run. They strive for medals; we, for pristine powder. Different objectives, similar discipline. One finds a certain symmetry in that. One must appreciate the rigor.

Should you attempt a descent, begin with Wide West. Arrive promptly at 9:00 AM, before the uninvited fully mobilize, and you may, just may, experience a fleeting moment of unadulterated perfection.
