Holiday Commerce, Discreetly Observed

One gathers Park Silly’s Winter Holiday Bazaar at the DoubleTree – Yarrow Hotel is intended to provide a respite from the more aggressive retail encounters of Main Street. A noble effort, certainly, though I foresee a predictable crush near the ‘Buff Santa’ photo opportunity. Eighty local artisans, you say? One hopes they’ve coordinated their displays; asymmetry is simply dreadful. The absence of a formal invitation suggests a deliberately accessible air, which, while democratic, feels…unrefined. It's certainly a far cry from the Kimball Art Center’s gala previews, where one must know someone to secure a viewing. One anticipates a sea of Canada Goose jackets and Ugg boots—comfort prioritized over couture. The organizers should, at the very least, insist on a tonal palette of winter white and charcoal gray. One presumes valet parking will be strained. A pleasant enough prospect for those seeking ‘one-of-a-kind’ gifts, though I suspect many attendees will simply be documenting the experience for social media. The Park City Institute maintains a much tighter grip on its events, and one appreciates the control. It’s a scene, undoubtedly, but lacking the requisite air of exclusivity.
