Peripheral Visions, Quiet Desires

One gathers the co-directors of “Jaripeo,” Efraín Mojica and Rebecca Zweig, are attempting a sort of cinematic intimacy—a rather gauche ambition, frankly—with this exploration of queer subculture within the Penjamillo rodeos. The film’s screenings, at venues like The Yarrow Theatre and the less-desirable Megaplex Redstone 4, are generating a predictable murmur. It’s the usual Sundance equation: worthy subject matter, earnest execution, and a crush of fleece-clad attendees desperately hoping to be seen at something. The choice to employ Super8 film, a distinctly retro affectation, feels… studied. As if to underline the ‘authenticity’ the filmmakers so clearly covet. One suspects a touch of self-regard in Mojica’s decision to be onscreen, though the intent to build trust with their subjects is, if nothing else, strategically sound. The abstract capturing of intimate moments, a strobe-lit embrace in a cornfield, is more suggestive than revealing. Though, really, isn’t that the point? The truly discerning appreciate a veiled narrative. The entire exercise feels… small. Precisely the kind of offering that doesn't necessitate braving Main Street. Send a check to the Park City Institute and remain comfortably insulated. The galas, naturally, are a different matter.
