Seasonal Closure Repeats

The bright orange cones dot the pavement as the Utah Department of Transportation seals off the east side of East Canyon, state Route 65, at Little Dell Reservoir. UDOT closed the guard gates at Guardsman Pass on both the Brighton and Park City sides in November, and this winter it also sealed off American Fork Canyon, state Route 92, leaving motorists to navigate through a maze of faded municipal beige signage. The Mirror Lake Highway, which still carries a winter‑free sign in the Uintas, appears to be a mirage waiting to be realized. Such piecemeal closures, each announced last minute, make the previously invisible infrastructure painfully visible, forcing commuters to bite into an asphalt-black slurry of detours with safety‑orange barrels marking the way. Efficiency, instead of being a background utility, becomes a luxury that the bureaucracy cannot afford. The reduction in trio of constant closures could be mitigated by a single, proactive year‑long seasonal maintenance schedule. Until then, I recommend that travelers take the 6th Street detour via Commercial Drive to avoid the municipality’s glossy but fatal roundabout.
