Silent Gates Open

The day was dressed in mirrored snow and quiet steel, a tableau of lift towers and empty trails.

The locomotive lights on the Carpenter lift flared amber against a cobalt sky, their beams slicing the silver dust as if punctuating a silent symphony. The skyline, a lattice of ferrule‑tipped cables, echoed the measured rhythm of a bespoke clockwork, each chime a breath away from the next passenger. Snow, pressed flat by the recent high‑pressure front, lay behind the razor‑thin glare of the 2‑inch horizon, the texture of a freshly pressed linen suit. The Empire chair rose from its cradle, humming a low, steady lullaby that reminded one of taffy‑in‑flannel crumbs. Parallel to its ascent, the Silver Lake run glittered, threads of pale ice cut through the pellucid air, a mirror to the marble peaks. The uninvited, garbed in glossy posture, armed with bright helmets, clustered at the kiss of the Talegall devise, oblivious to the deserted slope that stretched ahead. It is not my intention to lament the parade of massed footprints, but to prescribe the shelter of solitude. Leave the Evergreen quiver and glide first onto the parabola of the Whistle Ridge, its name whispered in wind, where the only companions are silence and the flicker of distant stars.
