Trivia Nights and Tiers

The pursuit of knowledge, it seems, now requires a reservation and a decent Pinot Grigio.

One gathers that Colleen McGinn's MegaMind PubQuiz, now extending its tendrils to the Ele Bar at Red Rock Brewing Company, is attempting a wider social reach. A valiant effort, truly. Though, from what I surmise, it's less about intellectual pursuit and more about proving one possesses a sufficiently curated collection of obscure facts. It began, apparently, in the back room of the defunct Wasatch Brew Pub – a rather humble origin, wouldn’t you agree? Now expanding to Jeremy Ranch Country Club, the Hyatt Centric, Heber Valley Brewing, and even Jackson’s Hideaway Ski Club (catering, naturally, to the ski set). One wonders if the trivia questions are tailored to reflect the average net worth of the participants. The commitment to including a 'kids' team' at Jackson’s is… earnest, if misguided. It feels distinctly not a Kimball Art Center gala, but it’s clearly attempting to establish itself as a Park City institution. The dedication to avoiding Wikipedia, and relying on National Geographic and The History Channel, is a detail one can appreciate. A small victory in an age of readily available, yet often dubious, information. To sustain this for fifteen years suggests a certain mastery of the local social currents. One imagines the destination management companies are quite pleased with this easily organized, low-effort entertainment.
