Warming Whiteways, Quiet Chains

Cerulean skies mask a snow that is more spring than winter, and the lifts trudge in a temperate haze.

Man in chairlift, the sky veils itself in cerulean, the lift towers, faded yellow, sit like tombstones. The groomers, with corduroy precision, have pounded the run into a texture that resembles a freshly pressed linen suit. Yet the snow itself feels thin, a layer of ash on a marble table, and the temperatures curl around the 50s, unsettling the melt. The Carpenter lift, the oldest, now idles like a sigh; the Silver Lake lift sputters with intermittent traffic from the uninvited, and the Empire cable, heaving beneath the weight of the day, drags its snow very lightly. The runners uncover the Tombstone Trail, which for the first time holds a slope of depth, but even that is thin, the kind of whisper that betrays a spring gaze. A solitary glide on the Imperial run would have satisfied a minimalist. However, the key to escape the masses is to start on the gently rising tributary of the Rope-1, a run that is barely seen by the wandering crowd. Ahead, the sky remains a pale cerulean with faint greys, a quiet invitation to glide, not to linger.
