Canyons Village, A Diversion

The Arts Council of Park City and Summit County, bless their civic hearts, are mounting the tenth annual Latino Arts Festival at Canyons Village. Ten years. One wonders if they've considered the logistical choreography required to avoid overlap with the final throes of The Series—or, more importantly, if the valet parking can absorb another influx. The forum grounds, apparently, will be dotted with 10x10 tents, each containing a maker hoping to entice with jewelry, sculpture, and what is described, rather vaguely, as ‘creative cuisine.’ Los Wizzards, Grammy-nominated, will be headlining. One shudders to think what their rider demands. A watch party for the Brazil versus Morocco match feels… tangential, even for Park City. I foresee a preponderance of gallery white clothing stained with various sauces. Andrea Zavala, the festival's director, seems genuinely enthusiastic, a quality I find increasingly alarming. Sponsorship opportunities, naturally, are available through Marissa Day. It’s all terribly… earnest. The $150 booth fee is a minor detail, of course; the real cost is the strategic maneuvering required to maintain one’s standing amidst the anticipated crush. One imagines the step-and-repeat red will be largely underutilized, overshadowed by the pastel hues of Canyons Village.
