The Freedog Winter Solstice Experience at Prospector Theater, naturally, was no exception. One arrived, bracing against the December chill and a distinct lack of valet parking, to find a gathering primarily comprised of the usual suspects: local musicians, a smattering of artfully distressed ski bums, and enough organic cotton to outfit a small village. The venue itself, blessedly off Main Street, offered a momentary reprieve from the holiday crush, though the ‘vibey-lit Solstice haven’ seemed less haven and more dimly lit conference room. The promise of 'authentic, homegrown music' delivered exactly that - a pleasant enough evening, but lacking any discernible spark. Attendees, dutifully adhering to the ‘white or blue’ dress code, seemed less engaged with the music and more concerned with being seen engaging with the music. The entire affair felt… polite. A curated experience for a very specific demographic. Organizers SoulForceOne and Mountain Town Music are to be commended for attempting something outside the Park City default of ostentatious displays. But an authentic Solstice experience requires a little bit of mess, a little bit of wildness. This was simply… tidy. A check sent to support local music is preferable to navigating the limited parking and lukewarm flute-glass gold.
