Gilded Glimmer Lethargy

The Holiday Lights Ceremony turns downtown Main Street into a racetrack for status hunters

The Holiday Lights Ceremony, a polished façade of snowlit exuberance courtesy of the Historic Park City Alliance, plays out under the civic glow of Miners Park and the already‑typed bricks of Historic Main Street. The first 200 VIPs are handed candy‑cane trinkets, the rest crowd around the rack of foam‑light necklaces as if they were secret sauce, all while the crowd–blooded ache of a velvet rope flickers like cheap tinsel. The dress code—gala black and audit‑quiet white—fails to keep the thundering crowd from turning the entire block into a frantic float of glittering bodies. Neighbors, tourists, and those who merely masqueraded as “supporters” formed a congealed jungle, and the whole affair felt less like an unveiling and more like a cultural version of a freeway bypass, just with more sequins. With the low‑grade image statistics of a neighborhood festival, one can’t help but wonder whether the organizers are more interested in camera angles than in actual community spirit. Verdict: Avoid the Main Street crush.
