Morning light was a washed‑out sienna, mingling with a subdued cerulean that muted the peaks. The lift towers—Carpenter, silver as old pennies, and Empire—stood like constellations, their veins of cold steel breathing a chilled refrain. The grooming bash had been executed with the precision of a tailored waistcoat, a texture that hummed with a freshly pressed linen suit rather than the usual furry fluff. Snow fell from the sky in soft powder that tasted of a fractured attic, pristine and unforgiving. The skier’s path was a narrow corridor of unmistakable white, the exception being the rain‑slick patches that lingered on the upper face of the Silverscape run. The Dragonridge two‑line bypass, a white ledge between cedar trunks, reeked of oily pine that warped the feel of edges. The uninvited crowd gathered on the standing queue of the Carpenter side, their sideways sliders shuffling noise into the air. The first run through Hick’s Feather, which opens at the base of Empire, cuts through the stillness and offers the cleanest ballast, before the day’s masses reach the crest. Therefore, the first run to crest without sharing the queue is Hick’s Feather, crossing the granite arch before any of the sideward peddlers crowd the Carpenter line.
