Quietly Grim Summit

The Alpine slush is a meticulously groomed tolerable, with nowhere to escape the uninvited.

From this chairlift, the canyon wall presents a pale, cerulean skyline, its peaks capped with a sheet of dust‑white, feather‑light snow that drifts like the texture of a freshly pressed linen suit. The carpet at the Carpenter Lift, after a 12‑hour grooming session, is corduroy‑smooth, shunning any variation in tone or friction. Above, the Silver Lake Lift skirts the ridge, its thin slick of snow clothed in a light amber sheen, while the evergreen Empire Chairs ascend the central spine, delivering white crust that is both dense and glare‑absorbent. All three lifts, otherwise tranquil, are perched between flights of the uninvited, who descend in swaths of uncoordinated sideways sliders, creating a faint hiss against the clear air. The day is artificially blanketed by a semi‑opaque cloud layer of mercurial hue, keeping the valley embedded in a silence that speaks louder than any roars. The best choice for a solitary descent is the untouched flank of the Lower Empress Run, accessed by the Silver Lake lift, where the snow stays firm and the slopes stay empty.
