Serenity on Corduroy

The lift pulls are calm, the groom is precise and the slope a silent study.

The morning unfurled in muted amber, the cerulean sky a glass hull over the valley. A solitary chairlift, the Carpenter, lifted me past sagging pines whose limbs were sallow like uncured resin; each cable pause was a silent sentence. The groomed hill beneath my boots had the texture of freshly pressed linen, the ridge edges cinched in a hard line of silver dirt. At the lift head, a faint hiss of air, a faint scent of spruce, the car cabin rolled on a delicate tread. Coming down, the run Saline Ridge sweated a silver sheen of ice, a perfectly straight ribbon that matched the symmetry of a colonial window, and the ground felt like a chalk dusting. The next lift, Silver Lake, rang a low chime as it moved through snow that had none of the dust of the previous day; the groom was an even, thick blanket, each pike a knob that let the run breathe. At the top of that, the Empire chair circled over a quadrant of flat, untouched fresh, and the wind whispered a tally against the mountain.

The descent was measured, deliberate. The untroubled bowl, Ridge Retreat, held a calm tide of powder that was not one step ahead of the calendar. The mountain, unruffled by The Ikon Pass crowd, was devoid of the sideways‑sliders who often overshot a pair of red poles. The first run to claim such quiet is Gravity Ledge, a narrow black that will keep the masses at bay if it is tackled before the sun is in the ridge.
