Sundance Shorts: A Measured Sigh

One assumes the 54 short films selected for the 2026 Sundance Film Festival—presented, naturally, by Ketel One—will be perfectly…adequate. The sheer volume of submissions (11,480, darling!) speaks less to a burgeoning artistic renaissance and more to the dwindling cost of digital cameras. It's all rather democratic, isn't it? The Park City Institute will, undoubtedly, have orchestrated a suitably chic series of screenings, though I suspect the Eccles and the Egyptian will be overflowing with the sort of aggressively enthusiastic festival-goers one must actively avoid. The inclusion of a 'Legacy' program—archival films alongside the new—is a predictable attempt to inject some gravitas. Though one wonders if anyone will actually sit through “American Dream” again. I note, with a certain weary amusement, the emphasis on 'dynamic and exciting filmmaking'. It is always 'dynamic,' isn’t it? And the endless online access…a concession to convenience, or a quiet admission that the real action remains firmly within the Utah snow? The Institute's support of short form cinema is commendable, of course, but I suspect the truly discerning will simply dispatch a check and avoid the Main Street crush.
