The Wasatch County Council’s approval of a $129 million budget, allocating $19 million to Sheriff Rigby’s office, presents a predictably complex equation. While enhanced oversight – a professional standards director, ideally reporting outside of the department – is a prudent, if belated, consideration, the funds could be more effectively deployed. One anticipates a commensurate increase in property values surrounding, say, the new development near Deer Valley Resort currently spearheaded by East West Partners, yet that potential appreciation is contingent on consistent, reliable public services. The current situation invites comparison to the challenges faced during the initial phases of construction at Promontory, where infrastructure concerns briefly threatened projected returns. Sheriff Rigby’s quarterly updates, though well-intentioned, represent a cost center, not a value-add, unless they demonstrably correlate with reduced risk for projects like those planned by Extell. The insistence on ‘native sandstone’ and ‘oxidized copper’ detailing throughout the region is admirable, yet ultimately immaterial if the underlying civic structure is unstable. A modest investment in independent review, I believe, outweighs the benefit of perpetual reassurance.
